We’ve already gone to the Moon with our Tycho Edition, but now it’s time to go a little bit further into space with our lettered edition of 2001: A Space Odyssey a.k.a. the HAL Edition. Like in the previous video, this one delves into the production details as well, further building on the idea that each edition is inspired by one of the story’s four arcs, resulting in four distinct editions.
But this time around, there are some upgrades as well! After all, it seems fitting for an edition inspired by a super-intelligent computer like HAL. We like to play around during preproduction, which often results in unexpected upgrades to our editions. This time, we’ve managed to add more than a few.
First, we toyed with the idea of making Discovery One ‘pop out’ more on the front cover of the case. To achieve this, we opted to use black goatskin leather with embossing and foil stamping, giving it a more pronounced 3D presence, so to speak.
Next, we noticed that practically the whole lining on the inside of the front cover is red and could be easily turned into HAL’s ‘memory room’ with detailed laser engraving. Adding a patch of goatskin leather completed the whole look, and now the HAL-inspired book looks even better alongside it.
Finally, we’ve announced something that has been in the works for quite some time, but we wanted to be sure first. The lettered edition’s illustrations will be printed using giclée on special Hahnemühle 100% cotton mould-made paper made specifically for that purpose. These pages will then be inserted into the book, giving the illustrations all the richness of colour that giclée is famous for. Needless to say, the art portfolio illustrations will be printed in the same manner.
