Announcement: Alice

I am very proud and excited to announce that our next title is actually two titles – we’re making limited editions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and what Alice Found There.

I won’t go too much into the creative concept, because I believe it will be more fun to see it once it’s ready. Then again, not sharing any details would be rude.

And we are anything but rude

Falling Down the Rabbit-Hole

This is a departure from what we did with our first two books, Jekyll & Hyde and Dracula, but we never intended to be a horror-only publisher. Nor do we plan to deal only in classics. It is almost certain that we, even as a fairly new fine press publisher, will move into licensed work, we simply could not pass on the opportunities Alice provides us to extend ourselves and push the limits of our work. We also plan to ramp up the publishing schedule; we planned to do it sooner, but this year has proven to be challenging for everyone, us included. However, as soon as Alice is done, we’re going to start working on several new titles.

But why Alice? There are numerous reasons, but the most important one is that it is one of those books that changed the ‘game’. Is it fantasy? Is it non-sensical fiction? Is it a children’s book? The discussions are endless and that is why we love it – it simply refuses to be put in a box.

There is no box?

The Name of the Game

As it has become tradition with our titles, we’re giving a name to each edition. Furthermore, since we decided to move to lettered & numbered editions, these will be their distinctions: the numbered edition will be named Jabberwock Edition and the lettered edition will be named Bandersnatch Edition. Since the names of these characters are some sort of a mashup of words, they fit nicely to what we did with these two titles.

Following the logic from my previous post about our numbered and lettered editions, Jabberwock Edition will be what we perceive as the ultimate edition of the book. It will come in an enclosed slipcase (which is giving us some trouble, but more on that below) along with a specially designed bookmark.

Bandersnatch Edition is where we went both down the rabbit-hole and through the looking-glass. I can’t say more without revealing too much, but what I can say is that it requires a lot of delicate work and this cannot be rushed. I am positively bursting at seams to finally show it, but it will take just a bit more time to get it done.

There is something that I can share, though. We commissioned more illustrations than ever in order to make Alice – twenty in total, not counting the covers and small chapter illustrations. One of these can be seen below; we teased it earlier, showing only one part of it, but now you can see the whole thing.

The State of Things

Now let’s get to the nitty-gritty details. We had plans to publish Alice much earlier, but we had some delays, as previously mentioned. We’re still working on it round the clock, it’s just taking a bit longer than we originally planned.

I’d say we have about 3/5 of the project done. The production of books is almost complete, as well as the bookmarks and some other features for Bandersnatch Edition. We’re still prototyping the slipcases, so they are the biggest hurdle currently. Once we have a hard proof of everything, we will have a public presentation (probably a live video that can also be watched later on), followed by photos on our website, either immediately or a few days later.

We will have a proper announcement for the release, so there is no worry that we will suddenly ‘drop’ the book on our webshop. There will probably be a countdown on the front page signalling when the books will be available for purchase. This should give you some time to check them out and decide whether you’re interested before making a purchase.

This pretty much covers it for now. As always, if you have any suggestions or comments, feel free to drop us an email or just use our contact form. Or you can join the Facebook Group that one of our fans recently made and join the discussions there!

See you on the other side!
